Mike Whittal, NSRI Gqeberha duty controller, said: At 18h19, Sunday, 19 May, NSRI Gqeberha duty crew, CWR (Coastal Water Rescue), EC Government Health EMS and the SA Police Services were activated following reports of 3 persons missing in the surf zone at Summerstrand.
It is believed that they went missing in the surf while swimming.
NSRI rescue swimmers and CWR rescue swimmers, the SA Police Services, Police Search and Rescue and EC Government Health EMS responded.
On arrival on the scene NSRI rescue swimmers and Coastal Water Rescue rescue swimmers launched into the surf conducting sweeping line free dive search efforts.
During an extensive sea and shoreline search the bodies of 2 adults (a male and a female) were located and recovered.
Sadly they were both declared deceased by EMS paramedics.
1 adult remains missing (believed to be a male) and Police divers are continuing in an ongoing search.
All 3 are believed to be locals.
The bodies of the 2 deceased have been taken into the care of Police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
Police have opened inquest dockets in respect of the 2 deceased.
Condolences are conveyed to family and friends of the deceased.
Thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing person.
