At 13h30, Monday, 1 January, NSRI Strandfontein duty crew were activated following eye-witness reports of a drowning in progress at Sonwabe Beach, False Bay.
3 males were reported to be caught in rip currents and being swept out to sea.
CoCT (City of Cape Town) water rescue network was activated.
The NSRI Strandfontein rescue vehicle, WC Government Health EMS, rescue squad, ambulance and response paramedics, CoCT Law Enforcement, CoCT Law Enforcement Marine Unit, the SA Police Services (SAPS), SAPS Water Policing and Dive Services (WPDS), Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services and CoCT lifeguards responded.
The NSRI Strandfontein rescue craft Rescue 1 Bravo was launched and a Muizenberg CoCT lifeguard jet-ski responded.
On arrival on the scene 1 male, age 18, was found on the beach. NSRI medics initiated Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation efforts and they were joined by emergency services.
An 8-year-old and a 12-year-old, males, were out of the water, and a 28-year-old male was missing.
2 unidentified male bystanders, Good Samaritans, had assisted the 12-year-old out of the water and they had tried to assist the man (age 28).
The 8-year-old had managed to get out of the water unassisted.
After all efforts to resuscitate the teenager were exhausted sadly, he was declared deceased.
A sea and shoreline search for the 28-year-old male continued but there remain no signs of the missing man.
An 8-year-old male was not injured (he is from Belhar, and it is his dad that is missing).
A 12-year-old male was transported to hospital by EMS ambulance in a stable condition for observation for non-fatal drowning symptoms.
(He is the brother of the 18-year-old deceased male - they are from Woodstock - the wife of the missing man is the sister of the father of the 18-year-old deceased male and the 12-year-old male who went to hospital).
Family has respectfully requested privacy in this difficult time.
A sea and shoreline search, for the 28-year-old male, continued but there remain no signs of the missing man.
SAPS WPDS (Water Policing and Dive Services) are continuing in an ongoing search for the missing man.
While rescue craft were responded along the shoreline towards this incident at Sonwabe Beach they were flagged down by public members about half a kilometer from Sonwabe Beach.
On investigating NSRI were met by a male, age 24, from Mannenberg, that had been rescued from the water by bystanders and he was on the beach with no pulse and no breathing.
A CoCT lifeguard jet-ski also attended at that scene (500 meters from Sonwabe Beach) and together NSRI medics and CoCT lifeguards initiated CPR.
Initially it was suspected that this case (500 meters from Sonwabe Beach) was related to the Sonwabe incident but was later determined to be a separate incident.
NSRI and CoCT lifeguards were joined by EMS paramedics.
After all efforts to resuscitate the 24-year-old Mannenberg man were exhausted sadly he was declared deceased.
Condolences are conveyed to the family of the Woodstock deceased teenager and the family of the Mannenberg deceased 24-year-old man.
Police have opened inquest dockets in the cases of the 2 deceased.
The bodies, of the deceased 18-year-old and the deceased 24-year-old, were taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
Our thoughts and support, in cooperation with Police and the emergency services, are with the family - related to the missing man at Sonwabe - in this difficult time.
