At 12h37, Sunday, 12 November, TMNP rangers alerted the CoCT 107 control after bystanders approached the rangers raising the alarm reporting a drowning in progress at Silvermine Dam.
SA POLICE SERVICES SAPS WPDS (Water Policing and Dive Services) DIVERS assisted by POLICE K9 SEARCH AND RESCUE and SAPS PATROL OFFICERS, NSRI STN 26 KOMMETJIE AND STN 16 STRANDFONTEIN and NSRI RESCUE CRAFT, WC GOV HEALTH EMS, TABLE MOUNTAIN SANPARKS, CT FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICES, CoCT LAW ENFORCEMENT, ER24, the EMS/AMS SKYMED RESCUE HELICOPTER and CoCT LIFEGUARDS responded.
During a search operation a POLICE K9 S&R TEAM onboard an NSRI rescue craft located a scent.
Police divers were deployed to dive search and the body of the 25-year-old local man was located and recovered.
The man had reportedly been swimming across the dam when it appears, according to eye-witness reports, that he suddenly disappeared under the water.
He was with friends at the dam.
The deceased has been taken into the care of GOVT HEALTH FORENSIC PATHOLOGY SERVICES.
Family is in the care of Police and Govt. Health Forensic Pathology Services.
Condolences are conveyed to family and friends - all efforts are concentrated on family and those affected by this sad incident.
NON-FATAL DROWNING ACCIDENT AT MILNERTON LAGOON BEACH:
While this incident at Silvermine Dam was happening, at 13h16, the CoCT water rescue network was alerted following reports of a drowning in progress at MILNERTON Lagoon Beach.
The SA Police Services, CoCT Law Enforcement, MILNERTON surf lifesaving lifeguards, CoCT lifeguards, NSRI STN 18 Melkbosstrand, WC GOVT HEALTH EMS, Netcare 911, COMMUNITY MEDICS, ER24 and Life Healthcare Response Paramedics responded.
SAPS WPDS were placed on alert.
On arrival on the scene 2 children were found to be out of the water after reportedly being caught in strong rip currents at the Lagoon at the turn of the peak of the high tide.
The male and female, aged approximately 12, were treated by paramedics for non-fatal drowning symptoms and transported to hospital by ER24 and Netcare 911 ambulances in stable conditions for further care.
