On the afternoon of Saturday, 29 January, NSRI Lamberts Bay duty crew were activated following Police reports of a man missing in Doringbaai harbour.

Matthys Koch, NSRI Lamberts Bay station manager, said:

On arrival on the scene our sea rescue craft jet rib Rescue 45 was launched to assist Police in a search for a 37 year old male, from Loeriefontein, who had disappeared under water after reportedly jumping off a pier into the water.

Eye-witnesses reported that the man had held onto an anchor chain of a boat at anchor appearing to rest before disappearing under water.

An extensive search has revealed no sign of the man.

A Police Dive Unit has been alerted and will continue in an ongoing search.

Thoughts are with the family of the missing man in this difficult time.

Earlier this month, at 15h00, on Wednesday, 19 January, NSRI Lamberts Bay duty crew attended at Skellemstrand, Doringbaai, following a fatal drowning.

The SA Police Services and WC Government Health EMS were in attendance where the body of a 53 year old male, from Middleberg, was taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.

It appears that the man had been swept out to sea in rip currents after reportedly being swept off his feet in shallow water and later the body of the man had washed ashore.

Police have opened an inquest docket.

Condolences are conveyed to the family of the deceased man.
