NSRI East London duty crew were activated at 16h00, Saturday, 1 January, following reports of a drowning in progress at Christmas Rock.

Geoff McGregor, NSRI East London operations manager, said:

A sea rescue craft was launched on the scene and the SA Police Services and EC Government Health EMS responded.

NSRI rescue swimmers and EMS rescue paramedics waded across to Christmas Rock where a man was rescued from Christmas Rock and he was waded through surf to shore and taken into the care of EMS paramedics.

An extensive sea and shoreline search was carried out searching for the man's brother but there remains no sign of the missing man.

Police divers and Police K9 Search and Rescue are continuing in a search at Christmas Rock, East London, where the local adult male remains missing.

At the same time as this incident NSRI East London duty crew and EC Government Health EMS were activated to respond to Gonubie following reports of a drowning in progress.

Prior to NSRI arriving on the scene local lifeguards rescued a man from the surf and he was taken into the care of EMS paramedics in a stable condition.

Earlier in the day, before midday, NSRI East London duty crew and the SA Police Services responded to Cinsta Beach where a search commenced for a missing 4 year old child who was located and returned to her family.
