SIMON'S TOWNDarren Zimmerman, NSRI Simon's Town station commander, said:At 16h15, Saturday, 6 March, NSRI Simon's Town duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) following reports from False Bay Yacht Club (FBYC) race control of a sailing Catamaran capsized off-shore of Simon's Town near to the Simon's Town Naval Harbour during a local regatta.The 2 sailing crew, a local husband and wife were reported to be accounted for, not injured and safe on the upturned hull of the capsized vessel.A fellow local yacht, Stella, had attached a towline to the casualty vessel to prevent the casualty vessel from drifting.The sea rescue craft Spirit of Safmarine III and Spirit of Surfski II were launched and on arrival on the scene we found the female had been transferred onto the yacht Stella.Additional race yachts were in attendance ready to render assistance if required.The skipper remained onboard the upturned hull.2 NSRI rescue swimmers were deployed into the water to assist the skipper to attach a towline from our sea rescue craft to his vessel.Despite one of the 2 hulls of the casualty vessel being flooded the casualty vessel was righted by NSRI and once righted a water extrication pump was used to pump water free of the flooded hull.The casualty vessel was towed by our sea rescue craft without incident to her berth at the False Bay Yacht Club.The crews of yacht Stella, the FBYC safety boat and the race yachts that attended on the scene are commended for their assistance.
OUDEKRAAL:Luke van Riet, NSRI Bakoven station commander, said:At 14h35, Saturday, 6 March, NSRI Bakoven duty crew were activated at the request of the SA Police Services to assist Police and the WC Government Health Forensic Pathology Services at a scene at Cosy Bay, Oudekraal, where a 19 year old male from Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain, had been declared deceased by paramedics following a reported drowning accident.On arrival on the scene NSRI Bakoven crew assisted Police and Forensic Pathology Services to recover the body of the teenager from barely accessible rocks on the shoreline.The body of the teenager was taken into the care of WC Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.Police have opened an inquest docket.Condolences are conveyed to the family of the deceased teenager.
MOSSEL BAY:Andre Fraser, NSRI Mossel Bay station commander, said:At 08h55, Saturday, 6 March, NSRI Mossel Bay duty crew were activated to assist a local RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat), with 4 crew onboard, suffering motor mechanical failure 2 nautical miles East of Mossel Bay Harbour.On arrival on the scene we found the 4 crew safe.A towline was rigged from our sea rescue craft and we towed the casualty boat without incident to the slipway in Mossel Bay harbour where their boat was recovered onto her trailer and no further assistance was required.
