Mike Shaw, NSRI Mykonos station commander, said:Just after 06h00, Tuesday, 02 February, NSRI Mykonos duty crew were activated following reports of a boat capsized off-shore North of Paternoster. Our sea rescue craft Spirit of East London II was towed to Paternoster and launched to begin a search in the vicinity of Seal Island, approximately 5 nautical miles North of Paternoster, for a local 35 year old fisherman who was reported to be missing at sea.The SA Police Services were at Paternoster Beach where the 4 meter Kreefte Bakkie (small open fishing boat) had been towed to by a fellow fishing boat.A 14 year old local male, who had been found on the casualty boat at Seal Island earlier by fishermen, had been brought to Paternoster by the fishermen who had towed the casualty boat to Paternoster Beach. He confirmed that the man, believed to be his uncle, had gone missing earlier at Seal Island. The teenager was not injured.MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) assisted in coordinating a search and plotting search grids.NSRI searched the area and were joined by Police divers.Despite an extensive search there remains no sign of the missing man.Police are continuing in an ongoing search operation for the missing fisherman. Our thoughts are with the family of the missing fisherman in this difficult time.
