UMKOMAAS:Nicki Gibson, NSRI Rocky Bay deputy station commander, said:At 14h40, Friday, 17 July, NSRI Rocky Bay duty crew, ER24 ambulance services, eThekwini Fire and Rescue Services, Toti beach office and the SA Police Services were activated following reports from the Toti beach office of a drowning in progress at Umkomaas beach, on the South side of the beach.Rescue and emergency services resources arriving on the scene found bystander CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) efforts in progress on a local man, believed to be aged in his early 60's, on the shore.Paramedics continued with CPR but after all efforts to resuscitate the man were exhausted sadly he was declared deceased.It appears that the man had been crayfishing and spearfishing in the water with his brother and with a friend.Reportedly while they were returning to the shore the man collapsed unconscious while in the water from unknown causes.The brother and the friend were able to get the man to the shore where they initiated CPR.The body of the deceased man has been taken into the care of the KZN Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.Police have opened an inquest docket.Condolences are conveyed to family and friends.
