Peter O’Hanlon, NSRI Melkbosstrand station commander, said:At 18h20, Saturday, 07 March, NSRI Melkbosstrand duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at Tableview Beach.NSRI Melkbosstrand launched the sea rescue craft Spirit of Brenda and Film Industry Fund Rescue 2, NSRI Table Bay duty crew launched the sea rescue craft Spirit of Day, a Big Bay Lifesaving lifeguard rescue craft was launched and NSRI rescue swimmers, LSA Big Bay Lifeguards, the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter, WC Government Health EMS, CoCT Law Enforcement officers, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services and the SA Police Services responded.On arrival on the scene an extensive sea, air and shoreline search commenced, including rescue swimmers deployed into the surf conducting free dive sweeping line search efforts.Despite the extensive search no sign has been found of a 15 year old boy, from Kraaifontein, who reportedly got into difficulty in the surf while swimming and was swept out to sea by rip currents before disappearing in the surf line.A Police Dive Unit are continuing in ongoing search efforts, supported by NSRI, CoCT lifeguards and Law Enforcement.Police have opened an investigation.Thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing teenager in this difficult time.
