Geoff McGregor, NSRI East London deputy station commander, said:At 08h45 on Sunday, 27th October, NSRI East London dispatched a Sea Rescue vehicle and launched the Sea Rescue craft Lotto Rescuer at Eastern Beach, East London, to join Police, a Police dive unit, Police K9 Search and Rescue, Buffalo City Fire and Rescue Services dive unit, EC Government Health EMS and Buffalo City lifeguards at an incident where 3 male teenagers, believed to be learners from Middleburg East London, on a school tour, aged approximately 18, were in difficulty in the surf. One teenager was rescued by surfers and he has been transported to hospital by EMS ambulance in a stable condition for observation for non-fatal drowning symptoms.2 teenagers remain missing in the surf.Despite an extensive sea and shoreline search there remains no sign of the 2 missing teenagers and Police divers and Police K9 Search and Rescue are continuing in an ongoing search.Police have opened an investigation. NSRI commend the surfers who rescued one of the teenagers from the surf.
