Hein Scheepers, NSRI Simons' Town deputy station commander, said:At 23h05, Saturday, 01 June, NSRI Simon's Town were alerted by WC Government Health EMS metro control following eye-witness reports of a red distress flare sighted in False Bay.NSRI Simon's Town, NSRI Strandfontein and NSRI Gordons Bay coast watchers were activated to look-out over False Bay and NSRI duty crews from all 3 sea rescue stations were placed on alert. The eye-witnesses, hiking on Constantiaberg, indicated seeing the red distress flare appearing to be off-shore of Muizenberg vicinity.Transnet National Ports Authority and MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) were alerted and by midnight no additional eye-witness reports were received and with no further sightings and with no reports of any persons at sea reported to be missing or overdue it remains unknown the reason for the red distress flare activation. The matter was monitored through the night but with no further sightings reported and with no persons at sea reported missing or overdue we suspect this to have been a false alarm. The eye-witnesses who remained at the same place continuing to observe for further flares until released to continue on their hike are commended for their assistance.
