Muizenberg and Fish Hoek:Vaughn Seconds, NSRI Strandfontein station commander, said:On Sunday, 02 December, NSRI Strandfontein duty crew launched the sea rescue craft Film Industry Fund Rescuer One rescue runner to assist a motor boat off-shore of Muizenberg appearing to be in difficulties with a local couple and their son onboard.On arrival on the scene it was found that their boat had suffered a damaged canopy in heavy seas returning from Seal Island and they were assisted into Kalk Bay harbour.We were then informed of a Hobie Cat capsized off-shore of Fish Hoek.We responded and NSRI Simon's Town duty crew were activated.On arrival on the scene a dad and his son were being assisted by Fish Hoek Surf Lifesaving lifeguards on their rescue rubber-duck and by the tender boat for the shark nets.The Hobie Cat was righted and they were assisted to the beach where no further assistance was required.NSRI Simon's Town sea rescue craft Spirit of Surfski II arrived and we returned to Kalk Bay harbour and NSRI Simon's Town escorted the motor boat to Simon's Town harbour without incident.
SEDGEFIELD:Garth Dominy, NSRI Wilderness acting station commander, said:We received this account of a rescue from local lifeguard Amore Heunis, who is also an ex-NSRI Wilderness trainee crew, and commend her and her friends Marilie Terblanche and Nadine Stroeble, local lifeguards, who were off duty at Swartvlei Lagoon Mouth, Sedgefield.This morning, Tuesday, 04th December, myself, Amore Heunis, and my friends Marilie Terblanche and Nadine Stroeble, went for a swim at the Swartvlei Lagoon mouth.There was a young crowd of children swimming with apparently no adult supervision.At about 13h30 I heard children crying for help, I turned around and saw a boy struggling in the water and his friends were shouting that he couldn’t swim.The current was pulling him and he appeared to be bobbing in and out of the water, struggling to stay afloat.I then ran and jumped in to help him, I managed to swim him over to the other side of the lagoon.I immediately placed him in the recovery position because he wasn’t looking well.I remembered about the pink NSRI bouy but it wasn’t in my reach at that moment.Marilie had run home to raise the alarm and she called Mike Wood, head of the lifeguards for Sedgefield and Knysna, who alerted paramedics who responded.I knew once Marilie arrived back from home she will remember about the NSRI Pink Bouy.When Marilie arrived back from home I signalled to Marilie to fetch the pink bouy and she swam over with the bouy to assist.The boy was not in any condition to swim over to the other side of the lagoon but then we saw people canoeing and we asked them to take the boy over to the other side where the paramedics were waiting and the canoeists assisted to get him across the lagoon to the paramedics.One of his friends was also stuck on the other side so Marilie and I, using the NSRI Pink Buoy, we swam him across the lagoon to safety.We are so grateful for the pink NSRI bouy which assisted us with the rescue and we are grateful for our lifesaving training that we can apply even when we are off duty.
ST LUCIA:On Thursday, 06th December, Allen Mellet, NSRI St Lucia trainee crew member, at Cape Vidal, noticed three people, a man, woman and a child, caught in rip currents at Cape Vidal.The female child and the lady managed to grab onto a mans bodyboard assisting them to stay afloat.Local fishermen, from fishing boats that were beached, had run into the water with life-jackets to assist.A bystander female who also went into the water to assist one of the casualties, who is a friend of hers, she also got caught in the rip currents.Allen, who had launched into the water to assist, reached that lady and swam her out of the rip current and safely to shore.At that stage the fishermen had been able to assist the adult male to shore and also assisted the body boarder to get the adult female and the female child to shore and they were safely on the beach.Everyone involved is commended for their quick reaction.
VERMONT:Deon Langenhoven, NSRI Hermanus station commander, said:At 01h03, Friday, 07th December, NSRI Hermanus duty crew were alerted to a rubber-duck with 3 men onboard adrift off-shore of Vermont in the vicinity of Breakfast Baai, suffering motor mechanical failure.The sea rescue craft South Star was launched and following a search they were located and a towline was rigged and we towed them to Hermanus harbour without incident and they required no further assistance.The operation was completed at 03h00.
CAPE POINT:Ian Klopper, NSRI Kommetjie station commander, said:At 00h30, Saturday, 08th December, NSRI Kommetjie launched the sea rescue craft Spirit of the Vines to assist 2 men on a rubber-duck with motor mechanical failure off-shore of Platboom, Cape Point.On arrival on the scene they were located and a towline was rigged and we towed them to Hout Bay harbour without incident and they required no further assistance.
