Beach safety has been prioritised at Lamberts Bay, Elands Bay and Clanwilliam Dam this season. NSRI has trained twelve new recruits who will conduct water safety patrols during the summer holiday season, as part of our drowning prevention drive on the West Coast. This project has been sponsored by the Cederberg Municipality and Western Cape Disaster Management as part of their drowning prevention strategy. The group completes their training tomorrow. The squad will be on duty from 10am to 6pm. The season runs from 19 November 2018 to 15 January 2019.“Water safety is a real concern for us and we are partnering with municipalities and other emergency services, working together to keep the public safe. We remind all visitors to beaches, swimming pools and dams to only swim when lifeguards are on duty and to swim between their flags. Children should have responsible adult supervision when swimming,” says NSRI acting CEO, Mark Hughes.Earlier this year, two water safety instructors were appointed to visit schools in the Matzikama Municipal area and the Cederberg Municipal area, as part of the NSRI Education programme. During these interactive lessons children are taught what to do in an emergency, how to call for help and they have the opportunity to practice basic HandsOn CPR. The West Coast District Municipality together with Bergrivier Municipality, Cederberg Municipality, Matzikama Municipality, Saldanha Municipality and Swartland Municipality has sponsored one of these instructors.NSRI has a rescue base in Lamberts Bay and has recently opened a new base in Port Nolloth.Images available for download from FLICKR https://www.flickr.com/photos/searescue/
