THREE ANCHOR BAY:Paula Leech, NSRI Table Bay duty controller, said:At 14h07, Friday, 20th April, NSRI Table Bay duty crew were activated following eye-witness reports of a paddler on a sea-kayak appearing to be in difficulty off-shore of Three Anchor Bay.
Our NSRI rescue crew responded to the scene by road, the sea rescue craft Spirit of Day was launched and Community Medics responded to the scene.On NSRI shore crew arriving on the scene a man could be seen in difficulty in the water holding on to a sea-kayak.While the sea rescue craft was responding towards the scene the pleasure craft Tigger 2 arrived on the scene and crew aboard Tigger 2 were able to throw a life ring to the casualty and despite being in the surf-line the crew aboard Tigger 2 started to pull the casualty man towards Tigger 2 to be recovered when the sea rescue craft arrived on the scene and the man was rescued aboard the sea rescue craft and brought to shore at the Three Anchor Bay slip-way.An NSRI rescue swimmer paddled the sea-kayak ashore.The casualty man, a local 64 year old man, was treated for hypothermia by paramedics and he requested not to be taken to hospital and following medical treatment on the scene he was released to go home nearby.The crew of Tigger 2 are commended for their assistance.SOUTH COAST - KZN:Jeremiah Jackson, NSRI Shelly Beach station commander, said:On Saturday, 21st April, at 14h00, NSRI Shelly Beach duty crew were activated following reports from NSRI Port Edward of a vessel taking water off-shore North of the Impenjati Nature Reserve.The NSRI Shelly Beach sea rescue craft Spirit of Dawn was launched and NSRI Port Edward dispatched a mobile rescue vehicle to assist with communications.On arrival on the scene we found a 5.5 meter rigid inflatable rubber-duck (RIB) with crew onboard and the RIB had motor problems complicated by a pontoon separated from the hull.A tow-line was rigged and we towed the boat without incident to Shelly Beach where the casualty craft was recovered without incident.WEST:Matthys Koch, NSRI Lamberts Bay station commander, said:At 16h43, Saturday, 21st April, NSRI Lamberts Bay, during routine training exercises, were activated following a request for assistance from a local fishing boat requesting assistance due to being low on fuel in dense fog and believed to be off-shore of Deerspring.Our sea rescue craft Douglas Murray launched and in dense fog a search operation commenced.We suspect that the GPS (Global Positioning System) of the casualty boat may have been faulty after all efforts to find the 3 men on the open fishing boat (casualty boat) could not be located at the GPS positions provided.NSRI Mykonos were placed on alert.Later, as dense fog lifted, the casualty crew confirmed that they were safe after reaching and getting ashore at Doringsbaai.Telkom Maritime Radio Service are commended for their assistance.ST FRANCIS BAY:Sarah Smith, NSRI St Francis Bay station commander, said:At 21h15, Saturday, 21st April, NSRI St Francis Bay duty crew were activated following reports from Telkom Maritime Radio Services of a 63 year old Russian crewman aboard the factory vessel Desert Diamond.NSRI Port Elizabeth dispatched 2 NSRI high-angle extrication crew and an EC Government Health EMS rescue paramedic and they joined our NSRI St Francis Bay crew and the sea rescue craft Spirit of St Francis II was launched.We rendezvoused with the Desert Diamond off-shore of the Port of St Francis.The paramedic and NSRI crew were put aboard the vessel and the patient, suffering hypertension, was stabilised and transferred onto our sea rescue craft and brought to shore and he has been transported to hospital by EMS ambulance in a stable condition.
