SHELLY BEACH:Pieter Venter, NSRI Shelly Beach coxswain, said:At 06h30, Friday, 13th April, NSRI Shelly Beach duty crew, Police Search and Rescue and MedEvac ambulance services responded to Shelly Beach where the boat Oupa’s Dream, with 4 male crew from Gauteng onboard, capsized in the surfline while launching. On arrival on the scene we found three men, the skipper and 2 crew, had managed to get to shore after being thrown out of the boat when it capsized. It is not clear if the boat capsized completely but one man, the fourth man onboard, although he is not a boat skipper, had managed to motor the boat out to sea, despite hurting his back during the incident, and he was at the backline and standing-by at the backline and not confident to try to get the boat to shore through the incoming waves. The local boat Mighty launched to assist and a local skipper was delivered to the casualty boat by the local charter boat Mighty. That skipper brought the casualty boat to shore through the waves safely and without incident.2 of the casualty crew were injured, one man with the injured back and one man suffered a laceration to his face. Both injured men were transported to hospital in stable conditions. The casualty boat was safely recovered once she was brought to shore.NSRI commend the local Shelly Beach community and boat crews and the crew of Mighty for assisting on the scene.
