At sunset on Saturday the 15th of October, NSRI Richards Bay were alerted to a man missing at Sodwana Bay Beach, North of Richards Bay.Reportedly the 28 year old Pretoria man was swimming in the sea with colleagues when it appears that they were caught in rip currents and the man was swept out to sea by rip currents before disappearing.Two colleagues of the man also got into difficulties but they managed to get ashore and were not injured.Local iSimangaliso Wetland Park personnel, Ezemvelo Marine Officers and the SA Police Services activated a shoreline search that lasted into the night using search lights, but no sign of the missing man could be found.From first light on Sunday morning iSimangaliso Wetland Park personnel, Ezemvelo Marine Officers and the SA Police Services continued an ongoing search. Local dive charter companies and local fishermen have all contributed to search efforts and a Police K9 search and rescue team joined the search but no sign of the missing man has been found.On Monday Police continued with an ongoing search and we believe that a Police Dive Unit joined in the search efforts. A Police K9 search and rescue team have also continued to be deployed and iSimangoliso Wetland Park personnel are continuing to contribute to search efforts. A Police helicopter was due to join in the search.Locals (Dive charter companies, fishermen, boaters and the public) are contributing to the ongoing search.There remains no sign of the missing man who is missing and who is presumed to have drowned.Family of the missing man are being briefed by the authorities.NSRI commend all that have contributed to the search and to the ongoing search efforts.Police have opened an investigation.sodwana-beach Sodwana Beach (Picture: safarinow.com) TO REPORT A SEA RESCUE EMERGENCY DIAL 112 FROM A CELLPHONE
