SEA RESCUE – Jeffreys Bay – Monday, 22nd February. Boat capsized, 2 men assisted:
Rieghard Janse Van Rensburg, NSRI Jeffreys Bay station commander, said:At 17h31, Monday, 22nd February, NSRI Jeffreys Bay, shortly after launching our sea rescue craft Eddie Beaumont II from Jeffreys Bay Main Beach to join a sea rescue exercise with our flanking station, sea rescue St Francis Bay, we were alerted by eye-witnesses reporting a boat, with 2 men onboard, capsized in the surf line at Jeffreys Bay Main Beach. Our sea rescue craft diverted to head back to Main Beach and the local Municipal Lifeguards also responded. On arrival on-scene our sea rescue crew rescued two men, both locals, both in their early 30's, out of the water and they were taken safely aboard our sea rescue craft. They were brought to shore where our medics treated the skipper for shock and his crewman was treated for a laceration to his leg and he was transported to a local doctor for further treatment.Their boat was righted and recovered and we assisted the skipper to get the boat onto her trailer and no further assistance was required. It is believed that the boat may have suffered mechanical steering failure causing the boat to veer broadside to the incoming waves and causing the boat to capsize in the surf line.
