WaterWise Instructor Kenneth Gagela was relaxing at a park in Soweto when he heard a crowd of children next to the lake shouting and screaming. This is what he found:
“I saw this boy in the water trying to reach to a soccer ball and slowly moving in … and the water was becoming deeper. After the ball – and the boy – was out l asked him to have a word with me and gave him a lesson on becoming WaterWise.”
“Every weekend when there are soccer games at the park soccer balls are kicked into the lake and a boy will help them to get it back. And he has no swimming experience. He gets paid R 20.00 per team to do it. Risking his life.
I asked some questions about him and found that he is 14 and attending school at Indoni J S. S. in Soweto. And so I went to his school and did the WaterWise presentation.
Soweto has many cases of children been not taken care of by the parents. We are teaching the children how to be safe and how to get help.
