I am being welcomed with open arms in the Oudtshoorn District, where there are dams, canals and rivers surrounding almost all schools. When asking the kids at Bongolethu Primary in Oudtshoorn , where they swim, I am told, “the swimming pool next to the school, and the river”, and then one little voice piped up, “the canal!” fingers was soon pointed to other kids in the class, also swimming in the canal. This carried on from classroom to classroom, and it became very clear, that the canal was meant to be OFF LIMITS!At a school in Knysna, a Gr4 pupil answered most of my questions, when asked what to do in certain scenarios, at last I asked him how he knew all this, he told me, “I was at a school in George during Gr 3, and you visited my school then”.
