It was a day of great excitement for the group of trainee helmsmen on the surf course at Wilderness. The surf was huge and only the most experienced of the Wilderness coxswains took the tiller arms of the very fast surf boats, demonstrating their skill in the intimidating conditions. After a morning lecture the students were taken down to the surf where they practised righting a 4,2 metre boat and then each spent time in the boats with the Wilderness coxswains learning to read the channels and how to operate safely in the surf zone.A big thank you to the Wilderness crew who gave up their weekend to train their fellow volunteers and a big thumbs up to those who prepared lunch and the evening braai.Practicing righting a Practicing righting a 'capsized' boat.... up she comes. ... up she comes.wilderness-4823wilderness-4835The conditions needed some skill from the coxswains.
