WaterWise volunteer Instructors Lyndo Ziqubu and Annie Waterhouse report on their visit to this farm school in historic village of Fort Nottingham:
The kids have good football and netball fields and even outdoor play equipment including swings and a slide that are in good order! The classrooms are beautifully decorated with posters and pictures. This month’s theme was water so our visit was most opportune. Lyndo started by asking how many learners play in the nearby river. Although Fort Nottingham is cooler than Howick or Pietermaritzburg, all said that on the hot days they love to swim in the river. He made sure that all the learners understood how to use the PLAN method for water safety. We had a ‘quick fire’ question and answer session after Lyndo had explained how to react in an emergency using H-H-H. All participated enthusiastically and loved responding to Lyndo’s challenges.
We were able to spend time with individuals asking them to explain what was happening in the worksheet and what the correct response should be.
We were then treated to a music session where 8 learners played three tunes on the recorder. A music teacher in the district comes in to teach these promising children. We were delighted with the morning’s work and privileged to be able to visit this school.
