Gordons Bay and Melkbos

Gordons Bay:On Sunday morning the 5th of January at 10h45, NSRI received a call from the Department of Environmental Affairs - Oceans and Coasts to say that there was a turtle in distress just off the harbour wall on the SA Naval Base side of Gordons Bay harbour.Paddlers were at the scene trying to assist.The NSRI Gordons Bay sea rescue craft Spirit of surfski responded to assist and to try and free the animal. On arriving on scene, the Sea Rescue crew saw that the turtle had a water-ski rope around its body and around the one flipper. It appeared that the rope may have been there for quite some time as it had flesh around it and barnicales on the rope. The rope was cut off very carefully and the animal was freed.On being released the animal swam away and seemed to be fine.NSRI are cautiously optimistic that the animal will survive. Melkbosstrand:At 14h00, on Monday the 6th of January, NSRI Melkbosstrand responded to assist at Main Beach where two kayakers capsized in rough surf conditions.On arrival NSRI Melkbosstrand crew found that the kayakers were already in the surf line and were being assisted to shore by SA Lifesaving lifeguards.They were both brought safely ashore by the lifeguards and treated for mild hypothermia before being released requiring no further assistance.
