At 16h01 (Tuesday, 24th December) NSRI Simons Town volunteers were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at the Kleinplaasie Dam on Red Hill, Simons Town.NSRI Simons Town crew and the SA Police Services responded while NSRI Strandfontein were asked to respond with their 4.7 meter rigid inflatable sea rescue craft. The WC Government Health EMS dive unit, the Police Dive Unit and Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services dive unit also responded.On arrival on-scene NSRI rescue swimmers began a free dive search for an adult male who had gone missing under water while reportedly on a small inflatable raft. It is unknown what caused the man to disappear under water.On their arrival Police coordinated a scuba dive search of Police divers, EMS divers and Fire divers and during the search the body of the man was located and recovered and the body of the man has been handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services.Police have opened an inquest docket.While this is suspected to be a drowning accident the cause of death has not yet been confirmed.Family on the scene were assisted by Police trauma counsellors.The family of the deceased man have respectfully requested not to be contacted by media and any enquiries regarding this incident can be made through Craig Lambinon at NSRI Communications.The deceased man is Brett Nerwich, 30, of Plumstead.The NSRI and Emergency Services have expressed condolences to the family.
