Man missing, man drowned and man casualty evacuated off ship (in 3 separate incidents)

File image 'Boardwalk Rescuer' UPDATE: SEA RESCUE PORT ELIZABETH:From first light this morning (Sunday, 24th November) Police, The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal Beach Managers office, a Police Dive Unit and NSRI Port Elizabeth resumed a search at Kings Beach at the Port of Port Elizabeth's harbour wall for missing 28 year old Andrew Dalton, of Port Elizabeth, who went missing on Saturday afternoon while collecting mussels.During a police dive unit scuba dive search the body of the missing man was located at approximately 09h00 and recovered from under water and the body of the deceased man been handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services.Police have opened an inquest docket.In a separate incident today: At 07h45 NSRI Port Elizabeth, Police, a Police helicopter, Nelson Mandela Bay lifeguards and the Nelson Mandela Bay Fire and Rescue Services responded to Brighton Beach where a man was witnessed to be in difficulty in the surf while swimming.On arrival on-scene a search commenced for a 22 year old local man who is missing in the surf.Despite an extensive search no sign of the missing man has been found and Police and a Police Dive Unit are continuing in an ongoing search.Police have opened an investigation.Original story:At 01h00 on Saturday 23 November, NSRI Port Elizabeth crew were alerted by the Transnet National Ports Authority to be ready to rendezvous, at around 06h00, with the 200 meter bulk carrier BBC STEINWALL, sailing from Durban to Cape Town, reporting a 60 year old Filipino crewman to be suffering stomach pain and low blood pressure.We launched our sea rescue craft EIKOS RESCUER IV accompanied by a Gardmed ambulance services paramedic and rendezvoused with the ship, 5 nautical miles off-shore at 07h30.The paramedic stabilized the patient who was suffering from pain and the patient was transferred aboard our sea rescue craft and brought to shore where a Gardmed ambulance transported the patient to hospital in a serious but stable condition.Hospital doctors operated finding a burst appendix and following a successful surgical operation the patient is expected to make a full recovery.Then at 16h00 NSRI Port Elizabeth volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of a man missing in the vicinity between Kings Beach and the Port of Port Elizabeth harbour wall.According to friends of a 28 year old Port Elizabeth man the missing man had waded into the sea and was believed to have swum out to the vicinity of the harbour wall to collect mussels. A friend had last seen the man as he disappeared around the curve of the harbour wall and out of sight. At that stage he was reportedly still wading in the calm surf. At approximately 14h00, having failed to return, the friend may have then searched for him and not finding him had then raised the alarm.NSRI Port Elizabeth dispatched rescue swimmers and a 4x4 sea rescue vehicle and we launched our sea rescue craft BOARDWALK RESCUER and EIKOS RESCUER IV.The SA Police Services, a Police helicopter, a Police Dive Unit, The Nelson Mandela Bay Beach Managers office, Coastal Water Rescue, Nelson Mandela Bay Fire and Rescue Services were activated.A shore and air search commenced immediately for the missing man while Police and Sea Rescue authorities investigated all other possibilities to make certain that the man had not maybe come out of the water somewhere else and could maybe have gone home without telling his friend but all possibilities were ruled out when despite a full-scale air, sea and shore search and despite a wide scale land based search no sign of the missing man has been found.Despite calm seas a 1 meter swell with breaking surf against the harbour wall deflecting waves creates a strong sea surge in the vicinity of where the man, who was last seen wading in water, would have had to have started swimming (to reach where muscles can be collected in that vicinity).An intensive sea search included rescue craft covering an extensive search area up to 4 nautical miles in the direction of the drift, rescue swimmers free diving and Police Divers carrying out an extensive scuba dive search and Nelson Mandela Bay Fire and Rescue Services using a heat seeking FLIR infra red search device and the Police helicopter covering a wide search of the area while the shoreline and amongst the dollosse were extensively scoured by the shore rescue crews.Sea conditions and visibility were good in 12 degree sea temperatures.The missing man's father has been located by Police and both he and the friend are receiving trauma counselling by Police trauma counsellors.The search continued until well after dark and will be resumed at first light.The man is missing and Police have opened an investigation into the incident.
