Liza Wigley, Eden WaterWise Instructor reports:A chill ran down my spine ... after I had explained to children from a school in Karatara, how to save a friend without endangering themselves, one of the children told me about a drowning that he had seen last year.A man got a cramp in his leg while swimming at a waterfall, and his friend then jumped in to help, the child said: “the man that had the cramp, would not let go of his friend and kept on pushing him under and holding too tightly onto him, the friend that went in to try and save him drowned in the end”.It still amazes me every time ... I ask the children if they can swim, they admit that they cannot, but they still say that will jump in and try and help a friend.By the end of the lesson the message has got through to them, and I leave with a smile ...The principal of Karatara Primary has invited me to come back to their school once a year, just before the Christmas holidays, to re-enforce the message.Waterwise Eden is proudly sponsored by the Department of Agriculture.
