At 15h21 on Sunday the 11th of August NSRI Table Bay duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority following reports of a car gone over the East Pier Cape Town's V&A Waterfront.Pat van Eyssen, NSRI Table Bay station commander, said: 'Our NSRI Table Bay duty crew launched SPIRIT OF VODACOM and ROTARY ENDEAVOR and our sea rescue 4x4 rescue vehicle, V&A Waterfront Security, the SA Police Services, a Police Dive Unit, WC Government Health EMS ambulance and rescue squad and ER24 ambulance services responded.'On arrival on-scene it was confirmed that a vehicle, believed to be a waterfront maintenance bakkie, had gone over the pier into the water on the sea side of East Pier at the V&A Waterfront. Two men were reportedly in the vehicle at the time. The passenger was able to get out of the vehicle and get to shore and he is being attended to for shock and he has been checked out by paramedics and he is not injured.'Bystanders from the nearby waterfront helicopter pad, employees of the helicopter operators, had run over to help and reportedly one of the helicopter pilots had jumped into the water after grabbing a wheel clamp and he had smashed a window of the vehicle to get into the vehicle and he managed to free the driver from the vehicle. Once ashore the man was confirmed to be deceased by paramedics.'The body of the deceased man will be handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services.'It is not known what caused the vehicle to go over the pier into the water.'Efforts are underway to secure the vehicle and then tomorrow a crane will be brought in to recover the vehicle from the water.'Police will open an inquest docket.'These pictures are available for media download on Sea Rescue's Flickr page.Table Bay volunteers secure the car.
