MOOI RIVER KZN ON 25TH JULYAnnie Waterhouse, a volunteer water safety teacher, visited Kwacubela Combined school in Mooi River, KZN:The principal suggested that I teach Grades 4, 5 and 6 together. I was concerned that this would be too many learners but they were very well behaved and I taught about 50 kids in one classroom.I managed to get a representative from each of the grades to enact the river saving drama but only used learners from Grade 6 to try CPR on the doll. There was an enthusiastic repose to learning the Emergency number 10177. As it was such a big group I handed out worksheets (the principal photocopied them for the enlarged group) to be shared between four learners and they co-operated well. We talked about what had occurred in the picture and when all pictures were coloured in I invited a few learners from each grade to tell the story. Some Grade 6 learners were able to do this in English! The worksheets extend the WATERWISE lesson into other areas of the curriculum and it is proving to be most successful.Kwacubela Combined School children learn about Hazards, Hello and Help.
