Saturday 8 June 2013 was World Oceans Day. Station 20, Shelly Beach, was invited to participate in the events planned to celebrate our marine environment and to sign a pledge to protect the oceans. The major event was a flotilla sail-by made up of fishing vessels, dive boats and jetskis. Station 20 rescue craft, Caltex Challenger II, joined in the sail-by. A few dolphins and a whale or two joined the parade.A Waterwise workshop and a bystander CPR demonstration at the base were arranged for later in the day. Both were well attended. The crew also joined locals in a beach clean-up operation.“This is the first time that such an event has been held here and we felt that because of the service we render at the Sonny Evans Small Craft Harbour and the fact our base is housed there, we should participate”, Deputy Station Commander Pieter Coetzee said.“Overall, it was a good day with great spirit”, he added. The organisers expect the event to grow in popularity in the coming years.John Rolt teaching children how to use makeshift throw-bags as part of the Waterwise Workshop.
