At 15h45 on Monday the 22 April, Plettenberg Bay volunteers were called out following numerous eye-witness reports of a red distress flare sighted off the Beacon Island hotel.
Deon Truter, NSRI Plettenberg Bay station commander, said: “Our NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched SALLY JOAN and responded to investigate.
“On arrival on-scene we found a capsized Hobie-Cat with Kevin Allen, a Johannesburg man, holding onto the capsized craft.
“He was rescued and brought to shore and his Hobie-Cat was righted and recovered.
“Kevin is on holiday in Plettenberg Bay. He is from Parkview, Johannesburg and was not injured. He had capsized while sailing and was not able to right his craft. Requiring assistance he raised the alarm by setting off a red distress flare.”
