Boat found adrift off Cape Point:

At 07h00 on Saturday 22nd December NSRI Simons Town volunteers were called out following reports of a rubber duck that was found by the recreational fishing boat RED-EYE drifting 4 nautical miles south of Cape Point with no persons onboard.

Darren Zimmerman, NSRI Simons Town station commander, said: 'Early morning fishermen onboard RED-EYE came across the rubber-duck drifting at sea.”

NSRI Simons Town's Sea Rescue boat SPIRIT OF SAFMARINE III was at Cape Point at the time monitoring a paddle race and were quickly on-scene. They found a 4.2 meter rubber-duck with a sit down center console, a grey hull with yellow stripes, two yamaha 40 horse power motors (in very good condition), 2 dive bags with diving equipment and 3 dive cylinders.

The only writing on the boat is a name, H. Landers, stenciled onto one of the dive cylinders.

'The rubber-duck has been towed to Simons Town harbour and handed over to Police who are investigating,” said Zimmermann.

'No reports of anyone overdue or missing have been reported and it is unknown where any occupants, who may have been on the boat, are.”

Sea Rescue is appealing to anyone who may recognize the description of the boat to come forward and to call Simons Town Police Station at 021- 7868640 or the NSRI emergency line at 021-4493500.

'We are appealing for information in order to establish if the occupants that may have been onboard this boat are safe and are not missing, said Zimmermann.'
