FISH HOEK – Thursday 6 December, 2012. Appeal for information regarding clothing found on Fish Hoek Beach:

At 11h58 on Thursday 6th December NSRI Simonstown volunteer duty crew and Police were called out following reports of clothing left on Fish Hoek Beach and no sign of the owner of the clothing.

NSRI are appealing to the owner of the clothing or anyone who can identify who the clothing belongs to, to contact Fish Hoek Police Station - 0217826289 or to contact Colonel Andre Traut of Police Communications at 0833001752.

The clothing is a bright yellow Cape Storm shirt, a grey Peak Cap, Hi-Tech running shoes, white socks and a green bandanna.

It was recovered by a bystander who handed the clothing over to beach authorities at 10h30 today claiming that he had witnessed a man leaving the clothing on the beach earlier in the day and going for a swim but not returning to collect the clothing and not being seen since entering the water.

No details of the bystander who handed in the clothing were recorded and NSRI are also appealing to him to come forward with any additional information and to contact Fish Hoek Police Station - 0217826289 or contact Colonel Andre Traut of Police Communications at 0833001752.

Beach authorities initiated a sea and shore search and at 11h58 requested the assistance of NSRI. Police were then also activated and the WC Government Health EMS and a Police Dive Unit were placed on alert.

Our NSRI Simonstown volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched a sea rescue craft and responded but despite an extensive sea and shore search no sign of the missing person has been found.

Local shark spotters are confident that if someone had appeared to be in any difficulty in the water it would have been noticed.

It is not clear if this is a case of someone who may have left clothing on the beach or if it is a case of a possible drowning incident.

The situation is being monitored by Police and local beach authorities pending any new information that can shed light on identifying the owner and the whereabouts of the owner of the clothing.
