The event started 11 years ago when Eskom wanted to open the reserve to the public to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the proclamation of the Koeberg Nature Reserve.NSRI Melkbosstrand was asked to assist with the organising of the event and we were given an opportunity to raise some funds by making and selling some boerie rolls. This was such a success that Eskom asked us to repeat the event the next year. This is now history as they say. While the weather on the day this year was not that fantastic, and the weekend was proceeded by some heavy rains, the 4x4 tours were still a sell out and this year we also had a few more quad bikes than last year. The organisation is such that all the Melkbosstrand volunteers are needed to keep everything running smoothly.Even so, it would not be possible to run this event without organisations such as;1. Water Weights who covered all our logistical expenses and sponsored a number of prizes and give-aways for the day.2. Land Cruiser Club (Western Cape Branch)3. Paparazzi Studios4. Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd5. MTN6. And, of course our Melkbosstrand NSRI volunteersEarly indication look like we have achieved our target of raising R70 000 for our station. There are still some bills to pay, deposits to be returned and then we will have a clearer indicator. Our Regional Director, David Knott was given an opportunity to experience the Reserve for himself when he joined one of the tour groups in his 4x4. These are his words; “The day must take a huge amount of effort to ensure that all runs smoothly, which it did. I’m sorry I could not stay to watch the rugby – that looked like the party was about to really get going.! A very pleasant day and a rare experience to get to drive through the reserve.”A huge thank you to all who worked so hard to make the day the success that it was and to all who supported us!
