The SRHU team with the Base Commander.Our Sea Rescue Helicopter Unit (SRHU) is on a visit to the US Air Force - Rob Fine reports:The team landed at 06h30 and was met at the airport by their hosts and taken to the 106'th Rescue base, about an hour and a half's drive away. After a quick shower the team had a meet and greet with the Base commander, Colonel Tom Owens and the 103'rd Pararescue commander Lt.Col Sean Fitzgerald. The rest of the day was spent meeting the Pararescue team members and exploring the base.SRHU will be spending the week observing and assisting with the safety aspects of the US Air Force Pararescue event held in West Hampton Bays, Long Island, New York.On Tuesday, 5 members will be competing in a Zodiac endurance race while the remaining 3 will be assisting on the standby rescue boats.
The SRHU team infront of a C-130 transport plane. Pararescue teams use the planes for offshore search and rescue. They deploy zodiacs with parachutes over 300 nautical miles offshore and use the HH-60 Helicopters to recover them. These C-130's are equipped with additional fuel tanks and are able to refuel the HH-60 helicopter in mid air.
