At the weekend Station 19, Richards Bay, hosted an engine course. Eight crew from Richards Bay and two from Durban took part. As a Class 1 Coxwain you need this course before you can qualify for your ticket.
On Saturday morning the crew introduced themselves and told each other of their backgrounds and what they hoped to achieve through the course. Thereafter they were subjected to a small test so that the facilitator (Richard Laubscher from Barloworld Power) could determine everyone’s level of understanding of the motors.
Amongst other things the following was covered:
1) Basic repair and maintenance
2) How to order the correct parts
3) Diagnosing & fault finding
4) Fuel & cooling systems
5) In house protection systems eg: anodes
After the theory they were taken through the systems etc on our vessels engines which was followed by another test to evaluate what the attendees had learnt during the day. This was followed by a braai in the evening.
All in all it was an information packed day but even the Old Sea Dogs learned something.
Sea Rescue would like to thank the following sponsors:
1) Barloworld Power & Richards Laubscher for facilitating the course
2)The Protea Hotel Richards for accommodation
3) Canon Richards Bay for loaning us a projector
