At the weekend Station 19, Richards Bay, hosted an engine course. Eight crew from Richards Bay and two from Durban took part. As a Class 1 Coxwain you need this course before you can qualify for your ticket.On Saturday morning the crew introduced themselves and told each other of their backgrounds and what they hoped to achieve through the course. Thereafter they were subjected to a small test so that the facilitator (Richard Laubscher from Barloworld Power) could determine everyone's level of understanding of the motors.Amongst other things the following was covered:1) Basic repair and maintenance2) How to order the correct parts3) Diagnosing & fault finding4) Fuel & cooling systems5) In house protection systems eg: anodesAfter the theory they were taken through the systems etc on our vessels engines which was followed by another test to evaluate what the attendees had learnt during the day.
