Sea Rescue is made up of unpaid volunteers. This is one of the reasons that it is such a successful organization. Every single one of our members really wants to help save lives. Many of our volunteers have other charities and organizations that they support as well as NSRI and our Chief Executive Officer, Ian Wienburg, as usual leads from the front. And so it was, that, wearing his Rotary cap, Ian found himself dressed as Father Christmas handing out gifts to children in Somerset Hospital. It soon came out that he was a Sea Rescue man, and when the conversation got around to recent sea rescues, Ian hauled out his ‘phone to show the latest press release from NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon. And there was the story of twelve year old Zimkhitha Spambo who had been rescued at Melkbosstrand. The little girl had been rescued from the water, floating face down by NSRI volunteers at station 18. It didn’t take the hospital staff long to put one and one together and realize that Zimkhitha was the same little girl that Father Christmas had just given a present to.First a Sea Rescue volunteer gave her another chance at life and then, in a chance twist of fate, NSRI CEO Ian Wienburg, dressed as Father Christmas, gave her a present while she was recovering in hospital.“Is’nt it fantastic how things sometimes work out,” said Ian.Happy Christmas!
