On Tuesday 11 October Spirit of Safmarine III was called out to assist the 8 metre fishing boat 'Bennie 1'. Her engines had failed 3-4 miles South of Cape Point with 6 persons on board, but she was in no immediate danger as another craft waited alongside for the rescue boat to arrive. The vessel standing by 'Bennie 1' had attempted to tow her, but in the process the towing eye was pulled off, and they then decided to wait for NSRI.Spirit of Safmarine III arrived at the casualty at 14:25 and rigged a tow-line. Shortly after passing Miller's Point the tow line parted, and as the sea conditions were extremely rough, with waves breaking at the entrance to the Kalk Bay harbour, the decision was made to tow the casualty to Simon's Town Working Jetty.
