Life Boat Circle members were treated to a fascinating talk at Sea Rescue head office by three of Cape Town’s cold water swimmers, part of a group of five friends, who in February 2011 set a world record by swimming around Cape Horn.Andrew Chin, Ram Barkai and Ryan Stamrood talked about their trip to Patagonia, with friends Kieron Palframan and Toks Viviers, which included three cold water swims. The first was Magellan's Straight - 4 km in 9 degrees c! Then the Beagle channel, which they did a there and back ( Chile to Argentina and back) swimming three km in 8 degrees ... and then the cherry on top - Around Cape Horn. One mile in water that was 7 degrees centigrade! And they were in this water for just over an hour.Congratulations to the ‘Patagonian Quintet’ and thanks for taking the time to talk to our LBC.After snacks NSRI bequest officer, Bruce Sanderson, used his singing talent to entertained us. It was really a memorable morning. The Life Boat Circle and NSRI wish to thank Roy Viljoen and Paul Bothner Music for the very generous discount they gave us on the purchase of the portable PA System with stand, and microphone. It is certainly going to make our lives a lot easier and save us a huge amount of money when Bruce, (or anybody else for that matter) needs to entertain and give a LBC talk. The unit was used for the first time at this event, both for the very interesting “Patagonia” lecture, and the entertainment afterwards!
