Richards Bay has been experiencing extreme weather conditions over the last 24hrs. The wind was peaking at 70kts with swells breaking 2 miles out to sea. Port Control’s wave rider buoy had waves peaking at over 10m at stages.
Fortunately no one was in distress.The adverse conditions seriously affected the Richards Bay sea rescue base. Roof sheeting was torn off resulting in our crew having to move equipment out of the offices. Supports were added to the windows to prevent them blowing out and the roof edges were tied down to weather the storm.
