Sea Rescue – Mossel Bay and Richards Bay – 28 December, 2010:At 16h26 NSRI Mossel Bay launched 2 rescue craft following activation by an off-duty NSRI volunteer who had noticed two divers waving towards shore in distress at The Point, Mossel Bay.On arrival on-scene a spear-fisherman, Quinton Rall, 37, from Mossel Bay, was found half a nautical mile off-shore, in choppy seas, being swept out to sea by a rip-current. He was brought ashore and reunited with his diving buddy, Francois de Jonge, also from Mossel Bay, who had managed to get ashore without assistance.Quinton was medically checked by Metro EMS paramedics and released requiring no further assistance.The two men had been spear-fishing close to shore when Quinton was swept out to sea by rip-currents.At around 10h45 NSRI Shelly Beach assisted the ski-boat Skilly II to shore with 2 crew on-board, which had sustained engine failure, to get safely ashore, and at 11h55 NSRI Port Edward assisted the ski-boat Black Pearl which had also sustained engine failure. NSRI Port Edward volunteers took 5 crew off the casualty boat at sea bringing them safely ashore aboard sea rescue craft. The skipper plus one of his crew brought the casualty boat in safely on one engine through the surf.
