Sea Rescue – Bot River – Thursday, 25 November, 2010. One survivor found and one man missing after boat capsizes on the Bot River Lagoon.
At 06h20 this morning Hermanus volunteers were called out following a report to the Metro EMS of two men missing on the Bot River Lagoon, between Hawston and the Arabella Golf Estate.
The Hermanus volunteers, a Metro team and the SA Police Service responded and started a search for the 54 year old father and his 22 year old son, both from Hawston.
They launched a 3.5 metre boat to go fishing, at around sunset, on the Bot River Lagoon, and had not returned. At 06h15, the alarm was raised by friends and family.
The 5.5 m RIB Hunters Gold Rescuer was launched on the lagoon and shore patrols started.
The capsized boat was found between the Benguella Cove and the Arabella Golf Estate, and shortly afterwards the father was found on the shore.
He has been treated by Metro EMS paramedics for shock and transported to hospital in a stable condition. The search is continuing for his son.
According to the survivor they were capsized by a wave at around 23h30 last night. Wearing oil skins and gum boots but no life-jackets hampered their efforts to stay afloat.
The father was clinging onto the upturned hull of the boat and his son was clinging onto a floating fuel tank, but during the night the 22 year old disappeared.
The father managed to swim ashore to where he was found by rescuers this morning and the search for the missing man continues.
