2020: first prize

Ishrat Arbi was first place winner of a Mistubishi Pajero Sport and a Mistubishi ASX. Ishrat recalls how she was walking around the V&A Waterfront when she saw the NSRI stand with sales staff selling tickets for the draw. They were encouraging people to “give back to the ocean”. She was intrigued because as a Sea Point resident, the ocean, which she loves, is on her doorstep. “At the time, I actually didn’t realise that I could win two vehicles,” she laughs. “I just felt the universe was guiding me to make a contribution, so I did just that.” Ishrat was the first finalist drawn in the NSRI’s mid year draw in July last year. She remembers feeling at the time that her luck would stay on her side, and she was right. Congratulations Ishrat!

2020: second prize

Runner up Ivan Harris recently celebrated his 88th birthday, and says his prize of R250 000 was “good timing”. Ivan has been a long-time supporter of the NSRI, having made contributions to Station 26 (Kommetjie) as it’s the station closest to his home in Scarborough, Cape Town. Ivan and his wife, Danielle, run Baskloof, a reserve that aims to promote the conservation of fynbos through education. “I really didn’t expect to win anything,” Ivan says, thrilled, and plans to continue his support of the NSRI.

2020: third prize

Ilse van Heerden was called up in January 2020 to see if she would be interested in taking part in the Double Mitsubishi Draw. She decided to do some research before committing. Ilse went online to find out more about the NSRI and what they do. Discovering that the organisation is the only one of its kind in South Africa offering a sea rescue service on a volunteer basis, she felt it was important to support them. “I bought a ticket, thinking ‘what are the chances I’ll actually win anything?’” Ilse and her family have a house at the coast, and she was in fact holidaying there when she was called and informed she was a finalist! After placing third and winning an R80 000 holiday, Ilse was thrilled. “Who wouldn’t be happy?” she laughs. “I feel very fortunate and am very grateful to the NSRI. My thanks to them.” Ilse and her family are relocating to a plot of land where they will pursue their vision for sustainable living and cultivating beehives, and their prize will go a long way to enabling this.
