NSRI EOC (Emergency Operations Centre) and NSRI Gqeberha, station 6, were placed on alert to prepare to perform a medical evacuation of an injured patient from a motor container vessel on Tuesday morning.
The National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) sixth Offshore Rescue Craft (ORC) Rescue 6 has completed her maiden voyage from Cape Town to her home station in Gqeberha’s port of Port Elizabeth and arrived at 15h30 on 25 September 2024.
Sean Lunnon, NSRI Gqeberha duty coxswain, said: On Friday, 13 September, at 20h11, NSRI Gqeberha duty crew were alerted to prepare to medically evacuate a male crewman, suffering a medical condition, from a motor tanker following communications indicating that the vessel was heading towards Gqeberha from offshore of East London and was expected to arrive offshore of Gqeberha in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Mike Vonk, NSRI Wilderness station commander, said: At 14h29, Saturday, 24 August, NSRI Wilderness were alerted to reports of a fisherman fallen and injured at Gwaing, near to George.
Jonathan Tufts, NSRI Gqeberha deputy station commander, said: A 39-year-old Sri Lankan male seafarer has sadly passed away despite extensive efforts, by NSRI Gqeberha and EC Government Health EMS paramedics, to save the man’s life.
East London, Eastern Cape, following the assistance on Sunday morning on the Buffalo River, where a sailing yacht sunk with a jetty and where NSRI East London saved a passenger barge from sinking (towed safely to moorings), at 12h06, Sunday, 2 June, NSRI East London, SA Police Services, the Police Dive Unit, Police K9 Search and Rescue, Priority Care ambulance services, BCM Traffic Services and emergency services responded 10 flood related incidents at various locations around East London.
Justin Erasmus, NSRI Gqeberha station commander, said: On Saturday morning, 18 May, at around 11h07, NSRI Gqeberha duty crew, while monitoring fishing craft launching for a local fishing competition, we activated 2 of our rescue craft to assist following a ski-boat, with 4 crew onboard, capsized by a wave in the surf zone during their launching to go to sea.

Terrence Grewar, 74-year-old retiree from the hamlet of Schoenmakerskop, on the wild-side of Gqeberha, had taken up a new hobby of paddling. He joined a paddling club based at the North End Lake and upskilled himself to a point where he was confident to launch from the gulley below his seaside retirement village, along with his experienced surfski friends and villagers, Norrie and Joyce Gibson.
A tourist surfaced from a scuba dive unconscious, and despite efforts to revive him, he was declared deceased.
NSRI Durban duty crew, accompanied by Netcare 911 rescue technicians, launched the NSRI Durban rescue craft Alec Rennie to rendezvous with a motor vessel to patient evacuate a 56 year old Russian seaman suffering a medical condition.
A 31 year old male Indian national remains missing at sea. We are appealing to mariners in Algoa Bay and beyond and public members along the Gqeberha shoreline to be vigilant.
NSRI Gqeberha duty crew were activated following a Mayday distress call, intercepted by TNPA (Transnet National Ports Authority) Port of Port Elizabeth Port Control and by Telkom Maritime Radio Services, from a local supply motor vessel, with 3 local crew onboard, taking on water and sinking approximately 8 nautical miles offshore of the Port of Port Elizabeth.

NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew were alerted by an eyewitness reporting an adult man on a SUP (stand-up paddle board) appearing to be drifting out to sea and in difficulty at Rooi Els.
Police are investigating a case at the Hermanus old harbour where clothing, a cellphone and other items were discovered on the shore.
NSRI Station 6, as well as several others in the region, are gearing up for the PE2EL Surfski Challenge, one of South Africa’s most scenic open ocean races, spanning 250 kilometres from Gqeberha to East London.

A Filipino seaman, suffering a medical condition on a bulk carrier motor vessel, was evacuated on Tuesday.
At 07h08, Thursday 2 November, NSRI Gqeberha duty crew and the NMB (Nelson Mandela Bay) water rescue network were activated and responded to Schoenmakerskop where a paddler on a paddle-ski was reported by eye witnesses to be in difficulty.

NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew were activated following reports of a man on an SUP waving for help after being blown out to sea off-shore of Whale Point.
At 11h12, Thursday, 21 September, NSRI Gqeberha Station 6, including 3 NSRI Gqeberha crew trained in SA Whale Disentanglement Network (SAWDN) whale disentanglement techniques and methods, launched 2 NSRI rescue craft from the NSRI rescue station at the Port of Gqeberha, Rescue 6 Alpha and Rescue 6 Bravo, following eye-witness reports of a whale entangled in fishing rope lines.
Tuesday 19 September at 15h00, after a weekend of rough seas and high winds, with the ocean around the Gqeberha and Eastern Cape coastline having calmed, a local 26 year old spear fisherman took the opportunity to launch into the sea from rocks at Willows Coastal Resort, near to Noordhoek, to enjoy the calmer weather and to get in some fishing.
At 08h00, Thursday, 14 September, NSRI Gqeberha duty crew were activated following a request for urgent assistance from a harbour service vessel reporting their skipper overboard and trapped in the wheel house that had been ripped off the vessel and flung into the sea, 8 nautical miles off-shore in Algoa Bay.

At 13h38, Friday, 2 June, NSRI Gqeberha duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at Maitlands Beach. The Nelson Mandela Bay water rescue network was activated. NSRI towed the rescue craft Rescue 6 Bravo which was launched on the scene.

NSRI Gqeberha responded to two separate incidents over the past weekend during a fishing derby, at Noordhoek ski-boat club. On Sunday, 30th of April, a boat carrying four crewmen capsized while exiting from the Noordhoek ski-boat club. Fortunately, all four men were able to climb onto the upturned hull of the ski-boat in the channel after being capsized by a wave.

At 19h15, Wednesday, 25 January, NSRI Gqeberha duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from a fishing vessel reporting a crew member (a fisherman) onboard the vessel injured after being bitten by a shark that had been caught in nets in normal fishing operations while they conducting fishing activities onboard the vessel off-shore of Gqeberha.
At 17h21, Sunday, 25th December, NSRI Gqeberha duty crew were activated following reports of a teenager swept over the sea wall while swimming at Seaview Resorts tidal pool, Beach View, in large waves during the Spring high tide.
