SCARBOROUGH: Ian Klopper, SAWDN team leader, said: At 16h31, Wednesday, 06th May, SAWDN (SA Whale Disentanglement Network) were activated following reports from a Scarborough resident of a whale appearing to be entangled in fishing rope and in distress off-shore of Scarborough. NSRI Kommetjie sea rescue craft, Spirit of the Vines and IL Batello, accompanied by SAWDN

Kommetjie – Tuesday, 24th March. Juvenile whale assisted in disentanglement operation:

Ian Klopper, SA Whale Disentanglement Network (SAWDN) team leader, said: SAWDN (South African Whale Disentanglement Network) volunteers were alerted at 16h26, Tuesday, 24th March, following reports of a whale dragging a buoy and rope in the vicinity of Kommetjie approximately 1.5 nautical miles North West of the Slangkop lighthouse. The report came from a local fishing vessel heading

SAWDN – Yzerfontein and Oudekraal – 3 whales assisted in 3 disentanglement operations:

DASSEN ISLAND: At 10h40, Thursday, 05th March, SA Whale Disentanglement Network (SAWDN) were activated to reports of a whale entangled off-shore of Dassen Island. SAWDN volunteers including additional crew from Cape Town and NSRI Melkbosstrand launched from Yzerfontein harbour aboard two NSRI Yzerfontein sea rescue craft, Rotary Onwards and Sonja. Struisbaai – Whale rescue:

Chris Wilkinson - of the University of Pretoria Mammal Research Institue - Whale Unit assisting at the scene to corral the Layard’s Beaked Whale away from the shore at Struisbaai.

Reinard Geldenhuys, NSRI Agulhas station commander, said: At 15h40, Friday, 24th January, NSRI Agulhas duty crew were activated following eye-witness reports of what was believed to be a dolphin injured in Struisbaai harbour. Our duty crew responded and found what was later confirmed by Marine Scientist Mike Meyer to be a Layard’s Beaked Whale beaching outside the harbour

LAMBERTS BAY – Humpback whale assisted in disentanglement operation:

At 05h30, Wednesday, 15th January, SA Whale Disentanglement Network (SAWDN) volunteers were activated following reports from fishermen to NSRI Lamberts Bay of a whale entangled in fishing rope lines in the vicinity off-shore of Lamberts Bay on the West Coast. SAWDN Cape Town volunteers from NSRI Headquarters responded to join SAWDN Lamberts Bay volunteers and the NSRI Lamberts Bay duty
