At approximately 15h20, Thursday, 14th November, NSRI St Lucia duty crew were activated following a call received from NSRI Richards Bay reporting people stranded in the Umfolozi River.
Our rescue crew assembled at our sea rescue base and were joined by the SA Police Services and a guide to escort the rescue team to the scene.
Our Sea Rescue vehicle, towing our rescue runner, responded to the scene with the guide and Police and on arrival on the scene we found 3 females, a 12 year old and 2 adults, trapped on a small island in knee deep rising flood waters in the Umfolozi River.
Our rescue runner launched onto the river and the 3 females were secured into life-jackets and in relays, one at a time, they were brought safely to the banks of the river without incident.
