Geoff McGregor, NSRI East London station commander, said:
At 15h30, Thursday, 06th December, NSRI East London duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at Eastern Beach.
The sea rescue craft Lotto Rescue Runner was launched and our sea rescue vehicle with NSRI rescue swimmers, the SA Police Services K-9 Search and Rescue, Aldersons ambulance service and BCM (Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality) Fire and Rescue Services responded.
On arrival on the scene a search commenced for 2 men, one aged 25 and one man whose age is unknown, missing in the surf after getting into difficulties while swimming.
Despite an extensive sea and shoreline search no sign of the 2 men has been found and Police K-9 Search and Rescue and a Police Dive Unit will continue in an ongoing search operation.
Police have opened an investigation.
