Dirk Manten, NSRI Vaal Dam station commander, said:
At 09h20, Tuesday, 30th October, NSRI Vaal Dam duty crew were activated following reports of a teenager swept out into the dam on a canoe.
A father and his son, from Vereeniging, were fishing when the farmer, whose plot they were fishing on, raised the alarm reporting the 19 year old had been swept away in a canoe while attempting to retrieve his bait boat and he had been swept at least 2km off-shore and out of sight.
Our rescue craft Harvey’s Fibreglass was launched and following a brief search we found the teenager in the water holding onto his canoe which had filled with water.
We took the teenager safely onboard our rescue craft and we recovered his canoe and he was brought safely to shore and reunited with his family and he was not injured and no further assistance was required.
