Geoff McGregor, NSRI East London station commander, said:
At 17h00, Thursday, 25th October, NSRI East London duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at Eastern Beach.
The sea rescue craft Spirit of DHL and the sea rescue craft Rescue 7 Bravo were launched and our NSRI rescue vehicle with NSRI rescue swimmers, EC Government Health EMS and an EMS rescue squad, SA Police Services and a Police Dive Unit and BCM (Buffalo City Municipality) Fire and Rescue Services responded.
On arrival on the scene we found an off-duty BCM Pro lifeguard had rescued one man from the surf and one man remained missing in the surf after the 2 men, aged in their twenties, had been caught in rip currents.
Despite an extensive search no sign of the missing man has been found and Police divers and Police K9 Search and Rescue are continuing an ongoing search operation.
The survivor was transported to hospital by EMS ambulance in a stable condition.
NSRI commend the effort of the BCM Pro lifeguard for rescuing one of the men.
