Norman Rautenbach, NSRI Richards Bay duty coxswain, said: At 08h24, Sunday, 18th June, NSRI Richards Bay duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) to assist the 38 foot yacht Zazu, with a South African couple onboard, sailing from last Port of call Durban to Mayotte, and having suffered sail damage in a storm on Thursday night in wind speeds reported to be gusting in excess of 50 knots they had then also suffered motor mechanical problems and contacted Telkom Maritime Radio Services for assistance reporting to be heading towards Richards Bay.
NSRI Richards Bay launched the sea rescue craft Spirit of Round Table II and rendezvoused with the yacht 3 nautical miles off the Port of Richards Bay and the yacht was taken under tow and towed into Port without incident and safely moored and no further assistance was required.
The couple will make repairs to their yacht before continuing on their voyage.
