At 20h00, Tuesday, 06th September, NSRI Strandfontein and NSRI Simon’s Town duty crews were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) following reports of multiple red distress flares, believed to have been at least 3 red distress flares, suspected to have been fired off-shore over the Kalk Bay or Muizenberg areas of False Bay.
An extensive search operation was activated when later reliable eye-witnesses came forward indicating that they believed that the flares had been set off inland and not from the coast.
NSRI kept a vigil on the ocean as a precautionary measure while slip ways were investigated but no sign of any persons or vessels in difficulty were found and no persons or craft were reported to be overdue.
It is suspected that these multiple red distress flares may have originated inland but giving the impression to people living along the coastline that they had originated off-shore.
On Wednesday, 07th September, with no reports of any persons missing or overdue the origin of these multiple red distress flares remains a mystery.
