On Tuesday morning, 05 April, NSRI Mykonos duty crew were activated following a request from Police, searching for a missing man at St Helena Bay, North of Saldanha Bay, to join in an ongoing search operation.
It appears that 3 local St Helena Bay men were returning from an unused fish factory (next to St Helena Bay harbour) on Sunday night (03 April) on a Kreef Bakkie (small open motor boat) when they began to be swept out to sea by strong winds.
Two of the men, one aged in his 20’s and one aged in his 30’s, were able to abandon the boat and swam to shore safely but leaving the third man, a 48 year old, onboard the boat. The man failed to return and on Tuesday morning the small boat washed ashore at St Helena Bay harbour without the 48 year old man and the alarm was raised for the missing man.
NSRI Mykonos duty crew responded to the scene and launched a Discovery rescue runner to assist Police in their ongoing search. An extensive sea and shoreline search has been conducted covering an extensive area but no sign of the missing man has been found and a Police Dive Unit has been tasked to continue an ongoing search operation in conjunction with local Police who are investigating the incident and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Family of the missing man are being assisted by Police.
